Where Our National History Began

The Columns Museum, located at 608 Broad Street in Milford, is the perfect example; this neoclassical mansion was built in 1904 and houses some of America’s most important artifacts, including the famous Lincoln Flag. Conclusively proven to be the flag that actress Laura Keene pulled off the balcony railing and tucked behind the dying President’s head to help keep him comfortable, it still bears the bloodstains from that unbelievable night and hangs in a corner of the museum in between a bust of the former president and a poster of the play that was performing that night. Other pieces of Lincoln or Civil War memorabilia can be found throughout the building, offering a unique glimpse into that trying time in our nation’s history.

Your exciting adventures in the Poconos are bound to make you hungry, and when you’ve finished your visit to the Columns Museum, you should be quite happy to learn that the Apple Valley Restaurant, located at 104 US-6, is just a short four-minute drive from the beautiful mansion that houses the museum! Apple Valley Restaurant isn’t big on being pretentious; the star of their show is the food they serve and the friendly service they provide, and they don’t see any reason to put on airs! Open every day of the week from 11:30 AM until 8:00 PM (9:00 PM on Fridays and Saturdays) the food found here could have come straight from your grandmother’s kitchen! Thick and juicy burgers, golden fried fish, and perfectly prepared steaks are just a few of our favorite meal choices, but we can honestly say we have never had a bad meal at Apple Valley!
For those seeking a more international choice, Tequila Sunrise, located at 305 E Harford Street (also in Milford), is another popular dining option! Serving authentic Mexican food in a charming and colorful building, we love that they use serapes as table covers, giving the place a casual elegance that makes a great impression. Serving the tasty Mexican fare we all love, their homemade chips and guacamole are some of the best we have ever tasted, and that’s saying a lot for an establishment that is found so far away from our southern border!
