Each year in late May, the nearby town of Jim Thorpe celebrates the birthday of the honored citizen for which their town was named: James Francis Thorpe, a Native American athlete who rose to the ranks of one of the top athletes of the 20th century. During the free 2-day event, visitors and locals alike can enjoy a weekend of music, dancing, drumming, Native American folklore, train rides, food, and crafts.
This fun-filled annual event takes place on the 3rd weekend of May every year, with 2022’s dates scheduled for May 21st and 22nd. During the event, a Native American tribute is given by local Native Americans and Jim Thorpe’s grandson, John Thorpe. A torch is carried from Jim Thorpe Mausoleum to the local high school and through the city until reaching Josiah White Park, where the celebration is held. A race is run, an enormous birthday cake is sold and served by the slice, and various athletic, musical, and storytelling performances are showcased to the public.
The celebration is held at 1 Susquehanna St., Jim Thorpe, PA 18229. You can also learn more information about the event by calling 1-888-546-8467, or by emailing info@jimthorpe.org.
