A vacation in the Poconos is about as all-American as you can get, but that doesn’t mean we can’t cater to the international tastes of the world, and nowhere is this more evident than in the selections of restaurants found throughout the small towns and villages that make up the Poconos area. From tacos to cannoli and bratwurst to egg rolls, there’s bound to be a restaurant serving just the food you crave. When the craving for something different hits you during your stay, a visit to the China Pearl Chinese Restaurant can be just what your palate ordered!
Located at 248 PA-940 #104
Open on weekdays from 10:30 AM until 10:00 PM, Fridays and Saturdays until 11:00 PM, and on Sundays opening at 11:00 AM, the exterior of this simple Chinese restaurant in Pennsylvania doesn’t come close to hinting at the deliciousness that lies inside! Beige walls, red letters, and a bright yellow sign do stand out however, making it easy to find. Once inside, the décor is simple and mauve, filled with comfortable booths and interesting Chinese artwork that is both welcoming and friendly.
The menu of the China Pearl Chinese Restaurant is pretty much what you would expect from any Chinese restaurant found in any corner of the world. It’s filled with delicious dishes such as Moo Goo Gai Pan, General Tso’s Chicken, and of course, egg rolls and egg drop soup. It’s the Chef’s Specials, however, that helps make China Pearl stand out in a sea of Asian restaurants, offering dishes like the Happy Family, which features a combination of shrimp, chicken pork, beef, imitation crab, and mixed vegetables, or Hawaiian Five O, another combination of meats and seafood. The Seafood Delight, as you may have guessed, offers a combination of jumbo shrimp, scallops, and imitation crab meat blended together with a mix of vegetables and a creamy white sauce. The Mei Fun and Chow Fun portion of the menu doesn’t refer to the enjoyment you’ll have sharing the dishes with your family, but rather means skinny and fat noodle dishes; mei = skinny, chow = fat, and fun is noodles! We love the Singapore Mei Fun, a spicy noodle dish created with shrimp, pork, and chicken served curry style, but please, feel free to try any of the items on the China Pearl menu. Every dish seems to taste better than the last!
Building Up an Appetite
Whether you’re building up an appetite before your meal or are looking for something to do that will burn off some calories after, there’s a lot to keep you occupied while exploring Blakeslee, the Poconos town in which China Pearl is located! Hiking through Austin T. Blakeslee Natural Area is one way of doing so, but it’s not the only thing to do in this scenic spot. Fishing in the waters that go through it or taking the annual family Christmas picture in front of the falls may not burn a lot of calories, but the memories will last a lifetime.
If you do choose to take a hike, keep in mind the trail can get a little muddy during the wet season, so you may want to bring along an extra pair of shoes to avoid tracking mud into China Pearl! The good news is the trails that lead to the falls are relatively easy with little elevation changes; even the younger members can manage the trail, but the paths aren’t built for strollers. If you have an infant or toddler, perhaps renting a Child Carrier Backpack would help keep your entire family on the trail to fun!
When You’re Craving Something Sweet
Our grandmothers used to tell us that eating something sweet after a big meal was the best way to signal to our stomach that the meal has come to an end, and whether you believe this as well or are just hungry for something sweet, J&M’s Sweet Cravings at 5264 PA-115 in Blakeslee has just the treat you need! Only open on weekends in the summer, this ice cream parlor is where all the action happens on lazy summer day. Enjoying the cool taste of your favorite flavor under the warm summer sky is the quintessential way to celebrate your summer escape to the Pocono, so be sure to leave some room in your stomach after your China Pearl feast. It’s impossible to be anything less than happy as you watch generations of families laughing, talking, and occasionally wincing as too big of a taste leads to an ice cream headache. This same scene has been repeated in places all over the world, but somehow, this moment in paradise is the one you will remember the most when you’ve traveled back to your real life.
